It hovers and waits,
Nonmaterial,
Malevolent, cold,
Beneath energy,
Ever expanding.
Consuming, it leaves
Exhaled nebulae
In widening wake,
Its gaseous trace,
Something to nothing
To something again
By quantum event.
Annihilation
Of things imagined,
Once called Abaddon –
Old appellation,
New phenomenon –
Observed but unseen,
Seldom recognized,
Nearer it slouches
Earthward in seeking
Dread incarnation
As if to confirm
The worst in ourselves.
